What are your office hours?
Our office hours are Monday – Thursday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and Friday 8:30 am – 4:00 with lunch taken from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm. We see patients by appointment only. We make every effort to accommodate families with sick children. If your child gets sick in the late afternoon when there are no appointments remaining, we may give you advice over the telephone and see your child the next business day. If there is an emergency we may recommend that you take your child to MUSC After Hours or the pediatric emergency room at Summerville Medical Center.
What do I do if I have an emergency when the office is closed?
Obvious life-threatening situations should call 911 or proceed directly to the nearest emergency room. For other situations, please call us for advice on how to proceed. We recommend Summerville Pediatric Emergency Room, MUSC Pediatric Emergency Room and MUSC After Hours.
For urgent needs that cannot wait until the next business day, simply call our office number and you will be instructed on how to reach the provider on-call. While we want to be available to our patients for urgent needs, we ask that you do not call after hours for questions that are non-urgent and can wait until the following business day.
Appointments and medication refills will not be handled after hours. For possible overdoses or poisonous ingestions, please call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Are you taking new patients?
We are taking new patients and we would love to see your child! Please give the office a call and we would be happy to set up an appointment.
Are all Lowcountry Pediatric physicians board certified?
Yes. Each of the Lowcountry Pediatric physicians is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and is reexamined at regular interval to retain board certification.
Will my child see his primary doctor for all visits?
You may always schedule appointments with your primary doctor. However, in order to see your sick child quickly, sick visits are often scheduled with the physician that has the next available appointment time.
How often does my newborn need to be seen?
During the first year, your baby will need scheduled well child check-ups and vaccinations. The first visit is 1-3 days after discharge from the hospital. The following visits are scheduled at 1 week, 2 weeks, 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 months. Starting at age 2 years, well child exams should be once yearly. It is important to keep these appointments as scheduled so that vaccinations will be timely.
How does your office handle “walk-in” patients?
In an ongoing effort to honor scheduled appointment times, the physicians at Lowcountry Pediatrics have developed a policy regarding “walk-in” patient encounters. Patients who come to the office without a scheduled appointment time will be offered the following:
- A same day appointment time with the first available provider.
- A different day appointment time with a specific provider.
- An emergency appointment if our clinical staff determines that your child needs to be evaluated by a provider immediately. Please note that emergency services charges will be applied to your encounter.
When do you see sick patients?
We offer same day sick appointments. Please call as early as possible to arrange a time after 8:30 AM.
Do you file my insurance?
As a convenience to you, we will file claims to your insurance company. It is the guardian’s responsibility to bring a current insurance card to each appointment and to update any changes to your contact information. Co-Pays and any remaining balance are due at the time of service. We accept most major insurance plans.
If I call to ask a question, how long should I expect to wait for a return call and answer?
Our trained medical assistants return calls throughout the day. Please allow for the healthcare provider to complete her patient schedule before expecting a phone return call. Every attempt to return your call during regular business hours is made.
Can I request a particular healthcare provider to see my child?
Absolutely! We encourage you to visit with all of our healthcare providers and determine which one best suits your family’s needs. You may schedule all future appointments with her. Remember all our healthcare providers maintain a rotation schedule. Some dates and times may not be available for your preferred provider.
What if I am late for an appointment?
As we attempt to meet the needs of all our patients, we must be considerate of their time. You must be on time for your child’s appointment. As few as two late starts for a scheduled appointment can shift an entire day’s schedule.
If you are running late or need to reschedule, please call us as soon as possible. If you arrive after the start of your scheduled appointment, we may re-schedule your appointment.
If I have a question about my bill, who do I call?
Should you ever have a question regarding your bill, please direct all questions through our online patient portal. It is our desire to facilitate an open line of communication between families and the office. Do I have to listen to an automated message when I call your office?
No. During office hours, our telephone is always answered by one of our friendly and professional front office staff. You will never have to listen to a phone tree menu during office hours!
What else can I do to make things go smoothly when I come for my appointment?
Upon check-in, please notify the front office staff is there are any changes with your contact information, and make note that copays are due at the time of service. Please also notify the nursing staff if your need a shot record before leaving the office.
What if my baby is born at East Cooper, Roper, St. Francis or MUSC?
The doctors at Lowcountry Pediatrics see newborns at Trident and Summerville Medical centers. If your baby is born at a different hospital, one of the pediatricians on staff there will see the baby while in the hospital. A follow-up appointment can be scheduled with us a few days after a discharge.
What if I need a shot record?
If you need a shot record, please call our office. Please plan ahead as we often receive a large volume of requests and we may need at least 48 hours to process your request. Also, if your child has received shots at another office, we can only include those shots on your shot record if we have a copy of them.
What should I do to prepare for my child’s check-up?
Please call your insurance company to see if your child’s vaccinations will by fully covered. This is important because we have two stocks of the same vaccines. The state of South Carolina provides vaccines at low or no cost to patients who are uninsured or under-insured.
What vaccination schedule do the doctor’s recommend?
We recommend adhering to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) vaccination schedule. Vaccinations are safe and effective in preventing serious illness.
What if I need a prescription refill or a prescription for WIC?
Please call the office or make a request over the patient portal. Please plan ahead as we receive large volumes of requests and may need 48 hours to process your request.
Will the doctor call in antibiotics without seeing my child?
Our desire is to practice excellent medicine. It is often difficult to accurately determine what is going on with a child without doing a physical exam. For this reason, we are unable to call in antibiotics without having seen your child.
