What are physicals?

Physicals are comprehensive physical examinations your child’s pediatrician completes to ensure they are healthy. Physicals allow your provider to detect illnesses, diseases, and injuries to prevent serious complications.

Your child might require a physical for school, sports, or a camp to make sure they are healthy enough to participate.

Why are physicals needed?

Physical examinations help your pediatrician detect the following:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Other chronic diseases
  • Heart problems
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Illnesses
  • Fractures and other injuries
  • Growth and developmental problems

Getting a physical exam once a year, or more often for babies and young children, is the key to maintaining optimal health and wellness.

What happens during physicals?

During your child’s physical, their provider checks their height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. They ask questions about your child’s lifestyle, symptoms they may have, previous injuries, and medications or supplements they might take.

Your pediatrician completes a physical exam to evaluate your child’s eyes, ears, throat, breathing, heartbeat, abdomen, limbs, and reflexes. They may also complete vision and hearing tests.

Based on the results of your child's exam, symptoms, and risk factors, their pediatrician might recommend a blood test, urine test, asthma or allergy tests, X-rays, or other imaging procedures to detect illness, disease, or injury. Lowcountry Pediatrics, PA, offers vaccinations too.

Does my child need treatment?

If your child is in good health, they probably don’t need treatment. If they have a health problem, however, their doctor might recommend medications, lifestyle changes, allergy or asthma treatments, or injury care to properly manage a disease or accelerate recovery after an injury. Your pediatrician might recommend using an inhaler or wearing a brace during physical activity.

If your child passes their physical, the Lowcountry Pediatrics, PA, team signs required forms for school, sports, or camp; they give you a copy for your records if you’d like. Scheduling an annual physical exam for your child is good practice.

The next time your child is due for a physical, trust the team at Lowcountry Pediatrics, PA, with their care. Schedule an appointment by phone or book online today.
